Disposing of waste correctly in Luzern

Fee bags, sorting, collection points. This is how you dispose of your waste correctly in the city of Luzern.

In Switzerland, people sort their waste. This is compulsory and protects the environment. For household waste (Kehricht) you need special bags.

The fee bag (Gebührensack)

Household waste goes into the official fee bag (Gebührensack). In the city of Luzern this is the bag from REAL (Recycling Entsorgung Abwasser Luzern). The disposal is already paid with the price of the bag.

You buy the bags at the supermarket checkout. Ask for a «Gebührensack» or «REAL-Sack».

Put the bag out on the street on collection day. The waste calendar (Abfallkalender) tells you when the collection comes. Depending on your neighbourhood, it comes 1 or 2 times a week.

Sorting waste

These things do not belong in the fee bag:

  • Paper and cardboard: bundled, on the street, on the days in the waste calendar.
  • Glass, aluminium and cans: free of charge, to the collection point in your neighbourhood.
  • PET bottles: back to the supermarket.
  • Batteries, paints, electrical devices: back to the shop where you buy them.
  • Green waste (kitchen and garden waste): separate collection, see the waste calendar.
  • Large items (Sperrgut): need a bulky waste sticker (Sperrgutmarke) or go to the REAL recycling centre (Ökihof).

What you can do now

  1. Buy REAL fee bags at the supermarket.
  2. Download the waste calendar of the city of Luzern or ask the caretaker (Hauswart).
  3. Look for the nearest collection point for glass and aluminium in your neighbourhood.
