Renewing your permit

Your permit is expiring? In Kanton Luzern the Amt für Migration renews it. Here you see when and how.

Your foreign national permit (Ausländerausweis) has an expiry date. Renew it before this date. Then your residence stays in order.

Permit B in Kanton Luzern

About 2 months before the expiry you get a letter. This is the expiry notice (Verfallsanzeige, the form for the renewal). It comes from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

You send the expiry notice to the Amt für Migration Luzern. At the earliest 3 months before expiry. At the latest 2 weeks before expiry.

You need these documents

  • The completed expiry notice (Verfallsanzeige)
  • A copy of your valid passport

How long is the permit B valid?

  • From EU/EFTA countries: 5 years.
  • From other countries: 1 year.

For L, C, F or N other rules apply. Ask the Amt für Migration or FABIA.

  1. Look at the expiry date of your permit.
  2. No letter 2 months before expiry? Contact the Amt für Migration.
  3. Send in the expiry notice and passport copy in time.
