Preparing a job application
CV, cover letter, references: this is how you apply for a job in Switzerland. With tips from arbeit.swiss.
In Switzerland you usually apply in writing. You send a dossier (application documents). Often as a PDF by e-mail or through an online form.
This belongs in the dossier
- Cover letter (Motivationsschreiben): Why do you want this job?
- CV (Lebenslauf): maximum 3 pages, most recent job first.
- Reference letters (Arbeitszeugnisse) from previous employers.
- Diplomas and certificates, including language certificates.
Check everything for mistakes. Name the files clearly. Write in the language of the job advertisement.
The CV
The CV (Lebenslauf) is the core of your application. It shows: your personal details, work, education, languages, references. Write the most recent experience first.
Where do you find jobs?
- Job-Room (job-room.ch): the official job portal. You can set up a job alert (Stellen-Abo).
- The RAV (regional employment centre) advises you on your application.
- Company websites and private portals also have jobs.
What you can do now
- Write your CV. Maximum 3 pages.
- Collect reference letters and diplomas. Have them translated if necessary.
- Create an account on job-room.ch and set up a job alert.
- Get help: RAV, BIZ or a counselling centre.
