Talking to your child's school

Parents' evening, parent-teacher meeting, interpreter. This is how contact with the teacher works in Luzern.

The school and the parents work together. This is normal and important in Luzern. You may ask questions. The teacher expects you to come.

The parents' evening (Elternabend)

The school invites all parents of a class. The teacher explains what the children learn. You get to know other parents.

The parent-teacher meeting (Elterngespräch)

The teacher invites you to a meeting. It is about your child: How is it learning? How is it doing? This meeting (Beurteilungsgespräch) is compulsory for parents.

You can also ask for a meeting yourself. Write to the teacher or call the school.

You still understand little German?

Tell the school. The school can book an interpreter. This is called intercultural interpreting.

The school books through the Dolmetschdienst Zentralschweiz of Caritas. You do not have to organise this yourself. Say it early, ideally a few days beforehand.

You can also bring a person who translates for you. Children should not translate.

Kanton Luzern has information for parents in many languages. For example about the public school (Volksschule) and the transition (Übertritt). You find it on volksschulbildung.lu.ch.

What you can do now

  1. Go to every parents' evening and parent-teacher meeting.
  2. Tell the teacher early that you need an interpreter.
  3. Write down your questions beforehand.
  4. Read the information for parents in your language on volksschulbildung.lu.ch.
