Family allowances. Money for your child

For every child there is money every month, the child allowance. Here you see how you get it in Kanton Luzern.

Parents in Switzerland get family allowances (Familienzulagen). This is money per child, every month. There are 2 types: child allowance (Kinderzulage) and education allowance (Ausbildungszulage).

How much money is there?

In Kanton Luzern (as of 2026):

  • Child allowance: CHF 215 per month, until the child is 12 years old.
  • Child allowance: CHF 260 per month, from 12 to 16 years.
  • Education allowance: CHF 268 per month, if your child is in education or training. Up to 25 years.
  • Birth allowance (Geburtszulage): once CHF 1'075 at birth.

There is only one allowance per child. Only one parent gets it.

Who pays?

You work? Then you get the allowance through your employer. The employer pays it out with your wage. You have several jobs? Then the employer with the highest wage pays.

You are self-employed or do not work? Then you apply for the allowance at the WAS Ausgleichskasse Luzern. People who do not work only get it with a small income.

  1. Ask your employer for the form for the family allowances.
  2. Have the birth certificate of your child ready.
