Registering your child for school

You are moving to Luzern? Then you register your child with the school yourself. Here you see how this works.

In Switzerland all children must go to school. This is called compulsory schooling (Schulpflicht). The public school (Volksschule) is free.

When does kindergarten start?

Kindergarten is part of the school. 1 year of kindergarten is compulsory. Your child must start kindergarten in August if it turns 5 by 31 July.

Many children already start at 4 years. This first year is voluntary. Ask the school if this exists in your municipality.

This is how you register your child (city of Luzern)

You are moving to Luzern? Then you register your child yourself. You do this with the Volksschule Stadt Luzern, not with the residents' services (Einwohnerdienste).

There is a form on the internet. One is for kindergarten. One is for primary and secondary school.

Do you live in another municipality? Then you register your child with the school management (Schulleitung) of your municipality.

Your child still speaks little German?

Children who still speak little German get help. This is called DaZ (German as a second language, Deutsch als Zweitsprache). Your child has a right to it. The lessons are part of the school.

What you can do now

  1. Go to volksschule.stadtluzern.ch. Look for the form «Anmeldung» for moving in.
  2. Fill in the form.
  3. If you have questions, call the Volksschule: 041 208 86 15.
  4. Tell the school if your child still speaks little German.
