Pregnant? Child ill? This is what you need to know

The health insurance pays for the check-ups during pregnancy and the birth. Here you find out who helps you and your child.

Pregnancy: The insurance pays

Are you pregnant? Go to a gynaecologist (Frauenärztin) or midwife (Hebamme). The basic insurance (Grundversicherung) pays for 7 check-ups in a normal pregnancy.

It also pays for the birth in the hospital, at home or in a birth centre. Plus one check-up after the birth, breastfeeding counselling and a contribution to the birth preparation course.

From week 13 until 8 weeks after the birth you pay no deductible (Franchise). Also no co-payment (Selbstbehalt).

You have no health insurance? Register immediately. FABIA or the social counselling service (Sozialberatung) help you with this.

Paediatrician

Your child needs a paediatrician (Kinderarzt, Kinderärztin). Look for a practice early, ideally before the birth. The paediatrician does the check-ups and the vaccinations.

Children pay no deductible. Register your baby with the health insurance within 3 months.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations protect against serious illnesses. The basic insurance pays for the recommended vaccinations. Since 1 January 2026 there is no deductible for them anymore.

A small co-payment (10 percent) remains. Ask the paediatrician about the Swiss vaccination schedule.

Mütter- und Väterberatung

After the birth, the parent counselling service (Mütter- und Väterberatung) helps you. It is free in all municipalities in Kanton Luzern. It advises on breastfeeding, eating, sleeping and development.

For children from 0 to 5 years. In the city of Luzern: 041 208 73 33. There are explanatory videos in English, Arabic, Tigrinya, Tamil and Portuguese.

Child is ill

Call the paediatrician. At night or at the weekend: health hotline (Gesundheitsleitstelle) 0800 041 041, free. In case of danger to life: 144.

What you can do now

  1. Pregnant? Make an appointment with a gynaecologist or midwife.
  2. Look for a paediatrician. Register your baby with the health insurance.
  3. Call the Mütter- und Väterberatung. It is free.
  4. Emergency? Call 144.
