Moving: handing over the flat and registering

When you move, you register the change with the municipality. And you hand back the old flat clean. Here is the order.

Registering with the municipality

You must report every move within 14 days. First you deregister in the old municipality. Then you register in the new municipality.

You must also report a move within the city.

In many municipalities this works online via eUmzugCH. As a foreign national you must come in person in the city of Luzern.

Bring: foreign national permit (Ausländerausweis), passport or ID, rental contract, health insurance card. Einwohnerdienste Stadt Luzern: Obergrundstrasse 1, phone 041 208 83 56.

Do you have permit N or F? Then you may not choose your place of residence freely. Talk to the DAF (Dienststelle Asyl- und Flüchtlingswesen) first.

Handover report (Übergabeprotokoll)

When you hand over the flat, the landlord writes a report (Übergabeprotokoll). It lists all damages. Read the report carefully.

Only sign if you agree. You only pay for damages that are more than normal wear and tear.

There is also a report when you move into the new flat. Write every damage into it. Otherwise you pay later for damages from the previous tenant.

Cleaning

The flat must be very clean: oven, windows, cupboards, bathroom. You can hire a cleaning company.

Look for an "acceptance guarantee" (Abnahmegarantie). Then the company cleans again if the landlord is not satisfied.

Date

You hand over the flat on the last day of the rental. Or on the next day by noon. Bring all keys.

What you can do now

  1. Deregister in the old municipality and register in the new one. Within 14 days.
  2. Clean the flat thoroughly or book a company with an acceptance guarantee.
  3. Read the handover report carefully. Only sign if you agree.
  4. Give the new address to the health insurance, the bank and the employer.
