Dentist: Who pays?

The basic insurance usually does not pay for the dentist. Here you find out what this means and where you get help.

The dentist is not in the basic insurance

The health insurance (Krankenkasse, basic insurance) usually does not pay for the dentist. You pay for check-ups, fillings and teeth cleaning yourself. You also pay for braces for children yourself.

There are exceptions. For example in case of serious illnesses or after an accident. The health insurance checks this.

Costs

Dental treatments are expensive. Before the treatment, ask for a cost estimate (Kostenvoranschlag, a list with the price). The dentist must explain the price to you.

Some people take out supplementary insurance (Zusatzversicherung) for teeth. It costs extra. Ask your health insurance.

Caring for your teeth

Brush your teeth 2 times a day. Go for a check-up 1 time per year. This way you avoid big bills.

Little money?

You cannot pay the bill? Talk to the social counselling service (Sozialberatung) of your municipality.

Do you receive social assistance (Sozialhilfe)? Then ask there before the treatment. Sometimes social assistance covers necessary treatments. This is not a guarantee, always ask first.

  1. Before every treatment, ask for the price (Kostenvoranschlag).
  2. Little money? Ask the social counselling service first.
  3. Ask your health insurance about supplementary dental insurance.
  4. Emergency? Call 144.
